Welcome to the Water Lane Surgery

Just minutes away from the Green, in the heart of the Clifton area of York, The Water Lane site has been an established GP practice in York since the 1950s. Our family medicine practice has operated from the Clifton Health Centre, since it opened in the 1960s, serving the surrounding community and adjacent villages. One of the founding partners, Dr Thompson, had a strong Quaker ethic which has a history of valuing all people equally, opposing anything that may harm or threaten them.

The Water Lane practice has a long history as a teaching practice, and many of the doctors working across York today have spent some time training at Clifton. The GPs who work most at Water Lane are proud to be generalists, but also have special interests in areas such as ENT, minor surgery, mental health and dermatology.

Whilst the surgery appearance looks quite grim, with a 8 foot steel fence around our car park, don’t judge a book by its cover, inside we are warm and welcoming and will be pleased to meet you.

Our Site Lead at this surgery is Sophie Lumb and will be able to help with any issues or enquires about the Water Lane Site.
