Coil and Implant Information Prior to Appointment

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT – BOTH COIL AND IMPLANT

Information on IUS/IUD (Coil) Fitting

–       Continue with your current contraception

–       If attending for a removal and refit coil – Please use additional barrier method (condoms) carefully or abstain for the week prior to your appointment, (in case there is a problem refitting).

–       Know the start date of your last period if you have them

–       If you find your bleeding is going to be heavy on the day of fit, please rearrange, fitting would be better at the tail end of your bleed

–       Read the information leaflet you have been given about your chosen contraception

–       Do not bring any children unless they can be supervised during the procedure

–       Make sure you have eaten before you attend

–       Take painkillers at least half an hour before the fitting

–       If you are Breast Feeding, please DO NOT feed for 2 HOURS before the coil is fitted. However, you can do this immediately after the procedure

–       Make sure you have no major commitments after the procedure as you may need to rest for the remainder of the day

–       Sometimes you may not feel 100% after the procedure, so make sure you can arrange for a friend/partner to accompany you home if you happen not to feel well    

–       Do not use tampons for your first period

–       Discuss with the Doctor how long you will have to abstain from sexual activity for

–       You will be shown how to check for your threads, it is best to do this after your period or monthly if you do not have periods

–       If you cannot feel the threads or you feel something hard like plastic, please DO NOT rely on your coil for contraception. Use condoms until you are able to attend a

–       Occasionally there may be side effects, you should seek medical advice if you have any of the following signs or symptoms: Abdominal pain with or without vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain and a delayed period, Pain during or after sex, Bleeding during or after sex.

Information on Implant Fitting/ Removal and Refitting

   – Continue with your current contraception

   – Know the start date of your last period if you have them

   – Read any information you have been given about your chosen contraception

   – Do not bring any children unless they can be supervised during the procedure

   – Make sure you have eaten and drank before you attend

   – Ask when you are able to stop previous contraception and how long you have to abstain from sexual activity for

   – You will have a dressing/bandage applied around the insertion/removal site after the procedure, this will need to be kept clean and dry for:

  – You may have bruising around the insertion site, this is common and varies with each individual

  – If there is swelling, pain or discharge at the incision site, it may be an infection. contact us via Klinik for advice
